Dollar Store Business Security Starts with Employee Lockers

If you are about to start a dollar store business be sure to budget for employee lockers. While they cost very little, they can contribute to store and employee security in many ways. They provide a safe place for employees to store their personal items. Likewise they keep employee personal items away from the cash registers. That reduces the ease of placing money directly from the register into the personal item.

Small security lockers are a fairly inexpensive to purchase for your dollar store business. In fact many are generally available on the used equipment market for very reasonable prices. Be sure that during installation the lockers securely fastened to the wall. They should be placed near or even in the employee break area. Allow employees to bring their own padlock to secure the locker if you want lockers emptied at the end of every shift.

If employees can bring their own padlocks, then you need to make a decision. One option is to provide a locker for every employee. While this is a convenience in terms of always having lockers available, it does open up the possibility that employees can store not only personal items, but also store-owned items in the locker. The second option is to allow employees to use lockers during their scheduled shifts. This option addresses some of the issues with ongoing storage, but it also means that employees must remove their padlocks and store them in another location whenever they are not working.

No matter how usage is managed, security lockers do provide a safe place for your dollar store business employees to lock their belongings. If the employees are using their own padlocks, they become responsible for the unauthorized opening of lockers and removal of their possessions which is likely not to happen when lockers are securely locked.

Security lockers support the guideline that employees never store their personal items under or around the cash register area. One of the reasons that many employees will give for wanting to store their items at the cash register area where they are working is to safeguard their items. A securely locked storage locker is even more secure. Without the combination or key, or a lock cutter, the locker is almost impossible to enter. Items that are simply placed under the cash register are not as safe. Items can be picked up whenever the employee is distracted. In a matter of seconds a purse can be removed from under the cash register and be out the front door of the dollar store business premises.
