How to Handle Merchandise Shrinkage in Your Dollar Store Business

Merchandise shrinkage can be a huge problem for every retailer. That includes those who own and operate a dollar store business. Allowed to go unchecked this one issue can result in an operating loss for your business. Consider that your very survival may well depend on decisions that you make and actions you take in this area.

Efforts must be made to hinder shop lifting, employee theft and other associate problems. Each can result in many thousands of dollars in losses due to merchandise shrinkage. While some incidents may be very visible and obvious to the owner, that is not always the situation. Your dollar store business may literally be out of money before some thefts have been discovered. Of course once the issues are discovered there are still hours, days or weeks of investigating remaining as you work to come to the true root cause of the thefts. In most cases there may never be an absolute, final resolution regarding exactly how the theft was executed or who did it.

The dollar store business owner is much better off to determine preventative actions before the store even opens for business. Additionally there are actions that you will expect employees to take in attempts to thwart theft. Your challenge is to determine the best way to handle all of the situations associated with employee theft, merchandise theft by shoppers, cash thefts, etc… Each will require its own set of actions, which requires an accompanying set of guidelines.

Establish guidelines regarding how employees are expected to handle all of the various issues. Communicate those guidelines and expectations to every employee. Offer training to ensure the employees are capable of handling the tasks associated with those guidelines and expectations. However be sure that your expectations and communication of those expectations include the clear direction that you are not expecting anyone to become a hero when your employees do become involved in an incident.

You have an obligation to protect your employees while they are working at your dollar store business. There is no amount of loss or money that can come close to equaling an injury that an employee might sustain in a futile attempt to prevent a theft. Be sure you factor that into the decisions that you make.
