Dollar store business security is an ongoing challenge. It is important that the business owner recognize the risks and then take steps to minimize those risks. While many may feel that effort simply involves installing a few security cameras to solve this problem, there is much more to be done. Standard operating procedures and practices must become a part of the day to day operation of your dollar store business. Efforts must be taken to reduce the risks.
One of the risks is associated with employee purses, backpacks, and other personal belongings. While a common practice in some retail operations is to allow the employee to keep these items under the cash register checkout stand that is not the recommended solution. The employee and your dollar store business both have too much exposure to problems unless other actions are taken.
While most employees can be trusted to have high integrity, there are exceptions. Since we are not mind readers, we have no idea who those exceptions are. A dishonest cashier can steal money throughout their shift. Some of the methods of doing this will be discussed in future articles. This article is focused on taking action that will reduce the risk. Theft is much easier if a purses, backpacks or coats are never allowed to be left sitting under the cash register area.
If you own a dollar store business it is important that you never allow these items to be stored under the cash register. Removing those items from the cash register area will not stop all theft. However it does reduce your exposure. Removing these items also helps to eliminate the chances that an employee’s belongings will be stolen. All it takes is the employee to leave the cash register area for a minute to pick up a dropped item, or to show a customer an item of interest, and someone can slip behind the cash registers, pick up a purse and be out the front door.
Security cameras should also be placed so that all actions and transactions are recorded. Should something happen, your video tape of the incident could be of great help to the police. Just the action of having those cameras present will also deter some illegal actions. Give these ideas a try in your dollar store business. Don’t ignore security precautions until you have a problem.
