Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the world’s mobile phone industry players and a foundation for women launched Thursday a program that aims to provide 150 million women in developing countries with handsets to empower them socio-economically.

Rob Conway, CEO of the GSMA, Cherie Blair, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s wife and founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer, and Clinton formally launched the GSMA mWomen Program at the U.S. State Department office. GSMA groups the world’s players in the mobile communications industry, including handset makers, software companies, equipment providers, Internet companies, and media and entertainment organizations.

The vision of the program is increasing access to mobile connectivity and services for women living on less than $2 per day so they will achieve a greater sense of security, independence, economic opportunity and connection with the world outside their homes. This in turn will lead to greater empowerment and control over their lives and those of their families.

“Helping more women access mobile technology means they can feel safer, improve their literacy, access vital health information and generate a better income,” Blair said at the launching of the program.

The program was prompted by a foundation-commissioned study that found 300 million women in developing nations do not own a mobile phone.

Mobile operators worldwide will also benefit from the program by earning $13 billion from supplying handsets to 150 million women.

DAYTON, OH (October 2, 2009) Ever wanted to have your dinner grilled up by a Marine while contributing to a great cause?

The Dayton, OH chapter of the Marines Toys for Tots Foundation has partnered with Instant Tax Service to hold a “Guest Grilling” event at BD’s Mongolian Grill at The Greene (4488 Glengarry Drive) on Sunday, October 11th from 6:00-8:00pm.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased for the event at Cold Stone Creamery at The Greene or by contacting volunteer event coordinator Lauren Grubb at lgrubb@itsfinancial.com.

Each ticket includes a 1 bowl stir fry, soup, salad, and soft drink at BD’s Mongolian Grill. Tax and gratuity is included. $10 of each ticket goes directly to the Toys for Tots foundation.

Tickets for the event can be redeemed at any time, but the Marines will only be available for guest grilling from 6:00-8:00pm on Sunday. Donations of new, unwrapped toys will also be accepted at this location from 5:00-8:00pm.
