Many people are confused by how a franchise works. Perhaps you are considering a franchise purchase but do not understand how they work. This article will break a franchise down into easily understandable parts.

Have you ever dreamed about owning your own business? Many people have; however, they have no idea where to start. If this is the case with you then perhaps a franchise could be the answer to your dilemma. Franchises are available in nearly every industry. There are three main steps to purchasing a franchise. They are the interview, the actual purchase, and the training. Take each step individually and the confusing process of buying a franchise can be simplified greatly.

Nearly all franchises will have an interview process to determine if you are a candidate to be a franchisee. Most franchises would prefer someone with a business background, but many franchises are very lenient and are confident they can train the right individual. Along with the interview process, the franchisor will help determine the viability of their franchise in your area. In this step they will help you determine population and location details.

The next step in the purchase of the franchise is the actual buying process. Some franchises will finance a portion of the purchase price with a down payment. The purchase price of the franchise will include equipment costs, the franchise fee, and ongoing royalties. The franchise fee is charged to cover expenses related to training in the use of the brand name. Nearly all franchises will also charge an ongoing royalty fee that will either be a set price or a percentage of revenue. Again, this is charged to use the brand name and the franchises business practices.

Finally, once the purchase is complete a training date will be set. Most franchises have comprehensive training programs that will span 1 to 2 weeks. During this training the new franchisee will learn the franchisor’s specific business methods. In addition, most franchises will briefly cover the management of the location. Finally, nearly all franchisees will receive some type of marketing training. Different industries will have specific marketing campaigns that work better than others. The franchisor will have a vast amount of knowledge in this field and can convey what works best.

There you have it. As you can see the mysteries of a franchise can be solved relatively easily. A franchise can be a great choice to increase your chances of success. Franchises have a much higher success rate than an individual business start up. This has to do with the proven business practices performed by the franchise.

If you are short on cash there are a number industries that can be entered into with a cheap franchise. Commercial cleaning, carpet cleaning, and cheap food franchises are just a few industries that are ideal for low cost investments.

Once you have made the decision to purchase a franchise, you need to obtain funding. Determining if you can find the necessary investment capital may affect your decision to start a franchise. This is an important part of your business plan, and it can be a much harder goal to achieve than you may realize.

In fact, many people give up their dream of purchasing a franchise because they are unable to find the money required to do so. Fortunately, there are many available funding options if you just know where to look. I’m going to discuss some potential funding sources so you can purchase a successful franchise of your own.

Obtain a Special Franchise Loan

Depending on the country in which you live, you may be able to obtain a special franchise loan to start a franchise. For example, the United States offers a lending program that has resulted in a huge number of successful franchises. They offer what is called SBA-backed loans to successful applicants. You should discuss the situation with your financial institution to see if you quality for an SBA-backed loan for your franchise. Many banks also provide a list of the specific franchises they are willing to fund.

Many British banks also operate a franchise unit that is specifically designed to provide financing to franchisees. Banks such as NatWest and Ulster Bank provide funding to many franchisers and franchisees. This can simplify the process of obtaining funding, since specific lending criteria have already been established. You may qualify for a “soft” loan; they require very minimal or no personal collateral as security, and they are generally offered at a much lower interest rate than traditional business loans.

Look For a Venture Capitalist

Another option to fund your franchise is to seek the assistance of a venture capitalist. You will generally be required to provide an extremely detailed business plan and an outline of every aspect of your proposed business. In order to obtain venture capital, you may also have to sacrifice as much as 50 percent of your business to obtain the required funding.

Consider Family Equity

Even if you manage to find funding for your franchise, you will need to invest some of your own money or “equity” into running the business. Hence, you need to make sure you are able to pay your bills every month and can handle all the necessary personal and business expenses. You should consider discussing your business with trusted friends and family members. They may be willing to invest in your new business venture if they see how determined you are to succeed.

Seek an Angel Investor

When I refer to angel investors, I don’t mean the kind with shiny halos and white wings. This term refers to an individual who is wealthy and is not a professional venture capitalist. This person has investment money ready for a lucrative investment opportunity or one that will net higher returns than traditional investment methods such as the stock market.

Most angel investors will only consider providing funding for investment opportunities that will earn them annual returns of 25 percent or higher. Many of these individuals are long-term investors who have helped many entrepreneurial ventures get off the ground.

Talk to the Franchiser

Last but not least, be sure to discuss the situation with the franchiser. According to recent statistics, approximately 30 percent of all franchisers are willing to provide financing to the franchisee directly or via a third-party lender. Your franchising agreement will normally indicate if direct financing is available. Even if this is the case, you will most likely need to consider alternate sources of funding as well. Most franchisers will not cover 100 percent of the required funding to run the business.

Did you realize that approximately 80% of new businesses fail each year? You certainly don’t want to become one of those statistics. Fortunately, Be Business Smart can provide you with the help and support you need to ensure your business becomes a success!

The Cons of Franchising

Since beginning my internet marketing business, I’ve spoken to and dealt with a few former franchise owners… none of whom had anything particularly positive to say about franchising. In particular, I’ve discussed the subject extensively with my current personal mentor (one of the current top internet marketers in the world… yes officially… it is ranked). This is a guy who lost two franchise stores and went USD $500 000 into debt soon after the recession began. The following article will discuss some of the major cons involved with franchising.

First and foremost, investing in a brand-name franchise is going to set you back somewhere in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now I understand that you’re investing in a potentially lucrative business, however, this is quite a massive sum of money to be investing in something with such an uncertain future. Why did my mentor fall $500 000 into debt? Well, the economy took a turn for the worse, and his franchises went with it. This was only a few short months after making his initial investment, and there simply wasn’t anything he could do to keep the business afloat… the economy was bad and people were spending less and saving their money. Many other franchisees and small business owners were forced to sell their businesses soon after the economy went down the tubes.

Now if you do get your franchise up and running, it’s certainly not the cakewalk many people believe it to be. Yes there are company systems in place to facilitate the running of the business, and a brand name will help you attract extra customers… but that doesn’t mean you can simply “plug in” to the system and let it run for you… there’s still going to be quite a bit of hard work involved. Franchises are definitely NOT “get rich quick” opportunities, and are by no means a guarantee of success, no matter how well-known the franchise you may be buying into.

Moreover, the hassle of dealing with employees exists. Who do you generally see working in franchise stores? That’s right… teenagers… most of whom like to fool around on the job, and don’t care which way business goes… good or bad.

Lastly, if you’re looking at buying into a franchise, it’s likely you’re looking to be your own boss. While as a franchisee you may not have to answer directly to anyone, you’re far from being able to fully-control the business. Simple rules such as wages, hours of operation, suppliers (you’re generally relegated to buying from the franchisor… no shopping around for cheaper and better deals), and so on, are out of your control. This system which helps you run the business is also going to greatly limit your flexibility as a business owner.

This article is not to say that every franchise is bound to be a failure, or that they’re impossible to run, just that they are simply not the sure-fire way to success many people think they are. Other, simpler, options do exist in the form of self-owned businesses. Online home-based businesses can be one incredibly lucrative option… an essentially recession-proof option without the requirement of a massive investment, employees, and overhead. Do your due diligence however and search out a legitimate home-based business as there are quite a few scams out there today.

Is Franchising A Business In A Box?

A franchise is commonly sold as a business in a box. You pay a start-up fee and royalties for access to a supposedly proven brand and product, and after a few weeks of coaching, you’re off and running toward success and profits. For some corporate refugees, purchasing a franchise can appear as secure as taking another company job, but with the ability to make more cash and not be hounded by a boss. Sounds simple, no?
A 2002 survey of franchisees, conducted by Frank Wadsworth, a lecturer at Indiana University Southeast, commends that a franchisee’s relationships with both his business and his franchiser are anything apart from simple or sure.

rated it below average or poor ) and 67% say their franchise has a good brand. although about two thirds have been rewarding at some particular point, only 44% say they’ve seen a good return on their investment. How can folk who are not happy with the monetary outcome of their business still be nearly satisfied with the business itself? Dr. ‘If you’ve put all this money into a franchise, you wish to think well of the choice you’ve made,’ Dr. Wadsworth notes.

An enormous Investment
Troy xmas, who owns a Money Mailer LLC franchise in Berkeley, Calif, highlights that, at least at the outset, franchisees are extraordinarily dependent upon their franchiser. ( money Mailer, of Garden Grove, Calif, sends envelopes of chits from local firms to homeowners. ‘When you’re starting out, you’re clueless, and all you know is keep your nose to the grindstone and do as the system tells you because it worked for other people,’ he says. Christmas reports that he is’s OK with cash Mailer, and he has received additional training and consulting when he’s's required them. Even so, he sees how franchisers can use that dependence to their advantage.

You’re feeling like they’re supporting you, even if there is not anything they can basically do to help you,’ he is saying. ‘The message you’re receiving from all this is if you are not doing well, it isn’t their fault, it’s your fault.’

Dr. ‘But none give their folks total freedom.’
And that is the way most franchisees want it. While less than half of the franchisees surveyed say they’re permitted to’exercise their entrepreneurial abilities’ or innovate with new products and services on their lonesome, 60% say they have as much autonomy as they desire.
‘The key to a franchise’s success is consistency ; getting the same sandwich or hotel room or service in Orlando ( FL ) as in Dallas ( TX ). So if you are a real businessman, you most likely do not want to have a franchise,’ Ken Hollowell, President of Profran Consultants says.

Outgrowing relations
David Boyuka, a Woodcraft Supply Corp. ‘There’s a price to pay for that, but you acknowledge that that’s the deal you struck.’

The Ultimate in Computer Data Services

When it comes to online backup service Skadoit is gaining ground as a household word. Skadoit has launched one of the most unique business offering ever. Skadoit began franchising its business to qualified franchisees just recently. Those franchisees are establishing both affiliate marketing campaigns as well as sales reps to promote the services.
You may think that your computer will never crash, but the fact is that thirteen percent of new hard drives crash each year. Put it all together with a world that is in economic peril and is seeing an increase in crime and all signs point to you needing to back up your files.

Here’s why:

There is no fancy equipment to buy and there are no hard programs to learn.

2. Always working: Because Skadoit is always working and knows what it wants to accomplish, which is backing up your files, you never have to worry about it.

3. Safer than most: Almost all the online backup companies that exist today encrypt your files once, but not Skadoit.

4. Works for all computers: Skadoit works for all computers that have been manufactured in the last several years. Whether you are using a PC or a Mac, Skadoit will work for you.

The home user that has multiple computers can take advantage of Skadoit’s 3 Pack for only $99.98.

6. Unlimited backup: With such a cheap price tag many people think that Skadoit will limit how much they can backup. Wrong.

7. Ease of recovery: If you do have something happen to your files, then recovery is as easy as one, two, three. All you need is a computer and your user name and password and before you can say Skadoit, your files that would have been lost forever without Skadoit, are now fully restored.

Try before you buy: Who doesn’t like something for free? Skadoit puts its money where its mouth is and lets you try their services for a full 7 days free of charge. If that doesn’t make you feel good about them then nothing probably will.

With all these facts about Skadoit it is no wonder they are always on the list of top online backup companies. With Skadoit, you are getting a great company that knows the game of online backup, so you have no excuse to ever lose a file again.

Learn more about Skadoit at our web site.

Skadoit was developed as a franchise by Profran Consultants and Ken Hollowell.
Profran Consultants has been developing franchises for over 30 years.

The 5 Major Myths of Franchising

Buying into a franchise can be a very lucrative investment. However, as a franchisee your success is far from guaranteed. Company-placed systems are designed to help facilitate business operations, however they do not, by any means, make running a franchise easy. The following article will discuss the 5 major myths involved with franchising, and will reveal what you will be up against if you decide to open your own franchise.

Myth 1: Running a Franchise is Easy

There is no business opportunity in existence which isn’t going to take some hard work and effort to run successfully… and franchising is no different. Franchises have “automated” systems in place to facilitate the running of the business… a feature which attracts many to-be business owners because the hassle and uncertainty of figuring out how to run their own business is taken care of. While franchises do have a slightly higher success rate than independent small businesses, you cannot simply “plug-in” to the system and have the business run on its own. As in any business venture, there is simply no replacement for good hard work. If you’re looking for a “get rich quick” opportunity, look elsewhere.

Myth 2: Franchises are Safe Investments

Many franchise owners are recently out of business due to the horrible state of the economy… and I’m sure they would tell you otherwise. In franchising, as with any business venture, there is a degree of risk and uncertainty which comes with investing. The state of the economy is out of your control… if it starts going downhill, there’s nothing you can do about it. Moreover, once their business is up and running, many franchisees discover that running a franchise is not the calk-walk they thought it would be. Well… if you find out that you don’t have the drive, motivation, or skills it’s going to take to be successful, you’re out an investment likely somewhere in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Myth 3: A Popular Franchise is Guaranteed to be Profitable

You can’t actually see the ledger of any franchise you’re walking past, so you really have no idea how well-off that franchise owner may be. Just because you own a McDonald’s or Subway doesn’t mean automatic profits. A well-recognized name may help to bring in some customers, but you’re still going to need to have the right skill set to run a particular franchise. Additionally, proper management, advertising, and hard work will play a large role in your success or failure.

Myth 4: Buying into a Franchise is Cheaper than Starting Your Own Business

When setting up your own independent business, you are responsible for equipment, furniture, legal and consultation fees, licensing fees, internet and phone connections, taxes, etc, and of course… a location. While these are mostly taken care of when buying into a franchise, what you will pay for is the recognition of a brand name, and that company system with a proven business model… this will often set you back a few hundred thousand dollars.

Myth 5: As a Franchisee You’re Your Own Boss

As a franchisee you may not have a boss you have to answer to directly, however, you may not be provided with the total freedom you’re seeking as an entrepreneur. Variables such as wages, hours of operation, suppliers (no searching around for a better or cheaper deal… you have to purchase from your franchisor) will likely be out of your control… you are restricted to the freedoms the company system allows you.

As my opening sentence states, franchises can of course be very lucrative investments. This article is not to state otherwise… it is simply to state that they are not the cake-walk, or guaranteed ticket to success many people believe them to be. So if you decide to buy into a franchise, be sure you’re ready for what’s to come.

Know Franchising

As well as the many questions that you must pose to a potential Franchisor, and the numerous questions they should pose to you, there are several other considerations for you to ascertain your compatibility with a specific Franchise system. If you are going to be getting into business with someone with the goal of making a superb future together, you must cover more bases than just the basic questions to know how the business makes money.

One of the initial things you should attempt to grasp is the level of development that the Franchisor’s candidate qualification system has reached. Your first reaction to that could be ‘Why do I care about a Franchise Qualification system – I only care if I get a Franchise or not?’ I might suggest that you need to care a large amount.

in fact , if the Franchise applicant qualification system has not been well developed, it may be a reflection on the business of the Franchise itself. The most important asset of any Franchise system will be its folk, including both Franchisees, and Franchisor staff. Almost all corporations will confirm that to be the case. So how do you identify if the statement matches the execution?
If folk are the most important asset, it might follow that the system of finding, qualifying, and granting Franchises to the best Franchisees would be a well thought out and well developed system. If there is not any formal step by step system to provide information to both parties then it may be an indicator that there are a few things astray.
That call should be whether you qualify as someone they can describe as one on their ‘most critical assets’.
If the system is too fast, for instance if you are given disclosure Documents within the 1st week of the due diligence process before many other stuff is considered, I would suggest there are a few things incorrect. To rush is to err. On the other hand, if the system is too slow, you will not get a real flavour for the company thanks to the sporadic nature of the flow. Culture is vital, and a steady flow of information will give you a better feel for the culture of the business than trading info each three weeks for a half year period. That does not imply that you must be in business in that timeframe, only that you would like to pick a choice in that timeframe.
Some systems will include a step-by-step system where you’ll receive information from the Franchisor, and then you’ll be needed to provide some info to them. When you supply the info, then the Franchisor will send you additional information to help gain more intimate knowledge.and so on . The explanation for that sort of system, which I would judge to be good, is that each of you is illustrating dedication to the process. The Franchisor has invested a serious amount of time and money to develop a definite system that is designed to earn all stakeholders a maximum return. So the Franchisor must establish that each new Franchisee is prepared and able to follow a good system. What better place to start than the basic evaluation system.

If the Franchisor does not have a good step-by-step info flow and due diligence system then that alarm bell in your head should go off.

I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to investigate the franchise development company you are thinking of using when franchising. It is extremely annoying to reveal that some of our competitors are facing serious litigation, tax crime and are under inquiry for fraudulent practices. For over thirty years I’ve watch many companies appear and vanish. Many Franchise Shingles have been hung by folk who confess to be franchise professionals when in truth they have only been associated with a franchisor for a short while and now think they can be a expert or worse yet, a franchise developer.

Two things you may ask the advisors are :

Are they published? Other words have they frequently written articles?
Have they been on radio or television?
Are they considered an expert witness?
Are they a public speaker or lecturer on franchising?

Yes this is all so true. Some of our unnamed rivals have been under investigation and now in litigation for making misrepresentations when selling franchises for their clientele. Allegedly, several franchisees have stood up claiming that this franchise development company misrepresented their customer because they’d a vested interest in the client’s company making culpable misrepresentations, concealment of info, conspiracy and breach of contract. The prosecuting solicitor has said’This company fully stepped out of the job of being franchise specialists and became their customer’s partner, joint venturer and legal counsel’.

This supports my position that a franchise development company who also sells franchises for their clientele is a conflict of interest. If you come across a corporation that offers this service and if they also require that you give them a % share of the company to defer charges, RUN. Not only are you jeopardizing the integrity of your business, but also future franchisees who buy into your system.

Other broadcast reports confirm that our nameless rivals have had their attorneys walk out on them refusing to be associated with the franchise development company. It has also been reported that just last week some of these franchise development companies have fired key personnel after failing to meet payroll. It is unclear how in depth these layoffs will be.

Bottom line, if you are shopping our competition, do your due diligence so you do not inherit pointless headaches and legal challenges.
