Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (AHN) – Canadian Privacy Commissioner Jennifer Stoddart said Wednesday her office is satisfied with the privacy changes popular social networking site Facebook has made.

The changes were made in response to complaints raised by Stoddard that certain Facebook practices, such as retention by Facebook of member files even if they cut off their membership and the exposure of private data of members to third party software developers, were against Canada’s Privacy Act.

Stoddard gave Facebook one year to implement the changes.

She said in a statement, “Facebook has since rolled out a permissions model that is a vast improvement. Applications must now inform users of the categories of data they require to run and seek consent to access and use this data. Technical controls ensure that applications can only access user information that they specifically request.”

Stoddard added, “We’re also pleased that Facebook has developed simplified privacy settings and has implemented a tool that allows users to apply a privacy setting to each photo or comment they post. “

However, Stoddard pointed out her office’s work with Facebook is not over yet. She said Facebook must continue improving its supervision over application developers. Stoddard also warned the owners of the social networking site against the expansion of categories of user information made available to everyone on the internet which could not be controlled through privacy settings.

Boulder, CO, United States (AHN) – Colorado officials report that the Fourmile fire has claimed at least 92 structures. Nine of the razed buildings were home of firefighters.

The blaze is the largest wildfire in Boulder County in at least 50 years, according to the Boulder County sheriff’s office.

More than 7,120 acres have burned and 3,500 people have been forced to flee their homes. Residents packed much of their belongings into their cars and raced down winding roads to safety. One couple who fled the raging inferno had the bumper of their van melt.

Some of the worst-hit areas were Pinebroke Hills and Sunshine Canyon. Evacuated areas west of Boulder are still too dangerous for homeowners to return to and firefighters are continuing to get the blaze under control.

Gov. Bill Ritter declared a state of emergency on Tuesday just as officials grasped a better understanding of the blaze’s size. It’s estimated more than 7,100 acres or 11 miles were torched.

“This is a very volatile situation,” Gov. Ritter said.

According to police, the fire was sparked when an automobile ran into a propane tank around 10 a.m. Monday in a tinder-dry canyon. The blaze was originally fueled by strong wind gusts topping 45 mph but the winds have abated considerably.

At least 300 firefighters from Colorado, Wyoming and the surrounding region are battling the blaze.

The main goal for firefighters now is to protect structures and to keep the fire in the perimeter that is bounded on the north by Lefthand Canyon; on the east by Poorman Road, Sunshine Canyon and Pine Brook Hills; on the south by Boulder Creek; and on the west by Mount Alto Park.
