If you are opening a dollar store one of the big questions that needs to be answered early on in the process is exactly what is the right amount to charge customers who shop in your store. At one time the only answer was $1.00. However as times have changed there are a multitude of options that now must be considered as a part of the pre-start-up process.

There are almost as many pricing options now available to the entrepreneur who is opening a dollar store as the mind can create. There are one-dollar-only stores. There are also one-dollar and less stores. There are stores that sell at the $1.00, $2.00, and $3.00 price points. There are stores that sell at the $1.00 price points from $1.00-through-$5.00. There are stores that sell at the $1.00 price point from $1.00-through-$20.00. There are also stores that sell at the $1.00 price point and then have special areas reserved for over $1.00 price point items. There are variations on all of these ideas and more.

It is important that the entrepreneur make the pricing decision before ever opening a dollar store. Once the store is opened for business changing prices will create confusion and likely will result in the loss of some customers. This is especially true when prices are increased.

If the decision is made to change prices a downward change causes the least impact. However it is likely that some higher priced products will no longer be profitable to the entrepreneur and thus will no longer be carried in stock. If you are opening a dollar store know that those customers who have grown accustomed to obtaining those products will likely complain and may even stop shopping as frequently since they will need to purchase those products at other stores.

If you are opening a dollar store the decision as to the right price point to charge is a big one. Invest the time to really examine the options and do everything possible to maintain the chosen format in the future.

Are you opening a dollar store? There are many components that all come together to create a profit. However one of the most important keys to success is in the buying of merchandise to sell in your dollar store. In fact the more effective you are at buying the merchandise for you store the more profitable your store is likely to become.

The largest single cost associated with opening a dollar store and running that same store is the purchasing of merchandise for resale. In fact some of the most successful dollar stores are those that are filled with popular merchandise. That merchandise was purchased for resale at bargain prices.

Many who are new to the business wonder how those who have opened a dollar store before them can find these bargain prices on the exact same items as they are selling. They can’t understand how other dollar store owners can get deep discounts on the merchandise that they buy for resale when they cannot. Their frustration grows as they work for discounts and cannot obtain them.

Frustrations grow even more when these lower-priced store owners guard the secrets to obtaining merchandise for lower prices. But it isn’t realistic to expect that your competitors are going to share the secrets that they worked so hard to discover for themselves. When you are opening a dollar store those secrets can literally make the difference between failure and success for your business.

One way to locate deeply discounted merchandise is to make purchases of closeout and liquidation merchandise. There are some drawbacks to this strategy including the quantities that you will at times be required to purchase and potential existing damage to the merchandise. However in many cases the merchandise is deeply discounted simply because of an overstock situation or a packaging change. In those cases the merchandise itself is perfectly fine for resale. That merchandise can create a great deal of excitement for your shoppers when you are opening a dollar store.

Don’t jump into the closeout and liquidation marketplace without learning more. The merchandise that is made available through this buying strategy can be a great find. It can also be one of the worst buying mistakes that those who are opening a dollar store can make. Complete your research before you buy.

There are many potential rewards associated with opening a dollar store. However, with those rewards come many risks as well. It is important that the entrepreneur who is opening a dollar store carefully determine what those rewards are in their case and then compare the rewards to the many risks that will also be faced.

So what are some of the rewards associated with opening a dollar store? The rewards can include the potential for monetary profits. There is also the freedom associated with working for yourself, and the pride associated with owning your own business. Among the biggest rewards for many is getting rid of the 9-to-5
J-O-B and the boss that comes with that J-O-B.

All of these rewards and more are attainable if you are opening a dollar store. Well run dollar stores can be profitable. Owning and operating your own business does offer a degree of independence. You can definitely determine what you do and when you will do it. (However, never lose sight of the fact that mistakes can affect business performance.) There is nothing to compare to the pride as you stand in your finished and ready to open for the first time store. Say goodbye to your boss; you are now your own boss.

All of these rewards are well worth seeking. They are all very achievable when opening a dollar store. However never allow those rewards to blind you to the risks associated with business ownership. Recognize the rewards. Recognize the risks. Together they define your potential business success. It is absolutely no fun to see a business fail because the risks existed, yet they were not recognized or properly addressed because of the potential rewards.

Sales management is a key activity when opening a dollar store. Prior to actually opening your store specific sales goals should have been established. As the store is opened and business operations grow your actual sales should be compared to those projected sales. Hopefully the result will be higher than anticipated sales. But what about situations when sales fail to meet projections? What happens if sales are lower than planned?

The best place to start is with the assumptions that were used to establish the projected sales figures. Examine each of the assumptions and make sure it actually works in the real business environment. At times those assumptions won’t all be valid after actually opening a dollar store.

If your business assumptions were incorrect, make the appropriate adjustments and then change your business operation to match the actual situation. This is generally fairly quick and easy since the incorrect assumptions will be obvious after actually opening a dollar store. In most cases this is not where the problem will be found however.

Next examine the location and the traffic at that location. In some cases this will be the source of the problem. However neither of these should emerge as the problem if investigative due diligence was properly performed before selecting the location for opening a dollar store. It is still important to double check that there isn’t new or different data to be considered however.

Generally when opening a dollar store there will be other specific issues driving a sales shortfall. Those issues may include the lack of key merchandise, an inadequate advertising/ marketing program, poor customer retention, new competition, or other underlying business issues. The correct issue needs to be identified and than appropriate fixes must be identified and implemented.

Are you opening a dollar store? If so take the time to establish sales goals. Monitor actual results against those projections. If sales are less than targeted take the time to investigate and fix the issues that are causing sales shortfalls.

One of the biggest challenges after opening a dollar store is keeping up with current trends in all aspects of business. Changing merchandise trends are no different. It is easy to fall into the pattern of replenishing currently stocked merchandise as it sells for you. That strategy leads to the risk that you become out of touch with the newest, and in many cases, the fastest selling merchandise that you can sell.

There are an almost unlimited list of resources for gathering data on the newest products, styles and trends. When opening a dollar store, the focus at the start should be on using the easiest found sources.

Customers are by far the fastest and easiest source of information when opening a dollar store. When customers begin requesting items, it is important to heed those requests. Begin to investigate the product or products that are being requested. Always bring up products that they might be seeking during discussions and especially during the checkout process. It only takes a minute to ask, and the information that you will receive is real-time. By simply maintaining a request list and then looking for trends, you will be on top of the latest desired products.

Suppliers can also be a wealth of information. Vendors who are really in-touch with the marketplace bring invaluable information to you after opening a dollar store. They can speak to sales others are achieving, as well as merchandising methods that they employ to achieve those sales. Plan to routinely make discussing merchandise trends part of every meeting with your better vendors after opening a dollar store!

Competitors? Yes, competitors are another great source of information. If you are willing to make it a practice to share information with better business operators, they will likely return the information. Provide data about what you have seen and been told by your customers. Competitors who know you can be trusted will start to willingly share the same. This one takes a little time to get going, but it sure is a great way to get to know what is happening with others in the industry after opening a dollar store.

Magazines and newspapers are full of information. Routinely look at the advertising of major national firms. Read every article that you can find about consumer trends, business trends, and other important information.

The list of potential trend and industry information sources goes on and on. This list provides a great place to start after opening a dollar store. Remember to stay dedicated to your search for changing merchandise trends.

Are you opening a dollar store? Then be sure that your start-up project plan is your master checklist for every step and action that will be taken to prepare and open your store. It also important to remember that none of these actions can be taken until a final lease has been signed, however.

As you are developing your project plan be sure that you include a timeline of completion for the actions. Since they will be listed in chronological order, your project plan timeline becomes your store completion and grand opening event timeline as well.

Be sure that you monitor the status of each and every action on a daily basis. If something is due to be completed, be sure that it is completed at the designed date and time. That is one of the critical steps to opening a dollar store as planned.

If you are opening a dollar store never hesitate to follow up with vendors, contractors, and others to make sure that they are on track and will be completing their designated action item as expected. By following up as a part of your daily and weekly routine, you will have advanced notice if there is going to be a late delivery, or if there are other problems that need to be addressed.

Be sure that you hold every supplier accountable for delivering as planned. Having merchandise arrive even one day late can delay the final grand opening date if you are opening a dollar store. There will also be employees and others to reschedule if this happens.

By using your start-up project plan as your master plan and timeline for preparing and opening a dollar store you greatly increase the odds for a successful grand opening that happens on the targeted date. Give it a try!

One of the biggest challenges that is faced by those who open a dollar store is finding the right suppliers for their business. The ideal supplier provides quality merchandise for lower costs than the competitors. That same supplier has a means of shipping that minimizes freight and other transportation costs. Finally that supplier always delivers exactly what they commit when they commit it.

There are many merchandise suppliers that come close to the above description. However the reality of the business world is that no single supplier is the total solution to providing merchandise when you open a dollar store. Therefore the challenge for the business owner is to manage the buying process so that every facet improves over time.

If you are about to open a dollar store set the goal to continually improve the buying process. In that goal should be reducing the cost of goods sold, which includes merchandise, shortages, breakage and freight costs. Work with existing suppliers to help you achieve your goals. Many will value your business and they will do everything possible to help.

Be sure to attend trade shows on a regular basis. Introduce yourself to potential suppliers and listen to what they have to offer. Ask questions to make sure that they are aligned to your business goals. Try the suppliers that seem best positioned to help you. Keep those who succeed and eliminate the others. When you open a dollar store expect to invest time and money as you seek the very best suppliers for your store.

Always be looking for new suppliers who can help you achieve your goals as well. Often a new, specialized supplier will work hard to gain your business as they enter the marketplace. Once they have your business they will also extend themselves to keep and even grow sales to your store. Leverage their efforts to help you become even more successful after you open a dollar store.

Success for those who open a dollar store starts with maintaining a fully stocked store. While it is possible to cover for some merchandise shortages, customers know when a store is under stocked. The question becomes whether the store is closing down, or whether the merchandise ordering is just done improperly. The bottom line is that sales will immediately go down whenever inventory levels are allowed to become depleted.

There is an almost magical balance between the cost of the money that is invested in merchandise to create appropriate inventory levels on the sales floor and the required inventory levels to drive higher sales. The cost of the money invested in inventory when you open a dollar store often wins too early, thus driving sales lower. Sales immediately begin to rebound when higher, more appropriate inventory levels are established.

It is a perfectly valid argument to feel that all back-up merchandise inventory that is being kept in the back room, or the stock room is not earning money. When you open a dollar store it is valid to argue that back stock inventory is in fact is actually costing money.

However, when you open a dollar store, maintaining a fully stocked sales floor is smart business. The goal when you open a dollar store should be to have customers react with a surprised look followed by ‘WOW!’ as they enter your store. A fully stocked store is impressive to store visitors.

When you open a dollar store never allow it to look as if there is not inventory available to support sales. Customers will immediately feel that there is no need to wander the store, as there doesn’t appear to be stock on hand. Customers will also be less likely to take the time to look for the new merchandise that just arrived. Customers will even hesitate to come back as often when inventory levels are allowed to fall too low.

If you open a dollar store don’t make the mistake of not investing in adequate inventory for the sales floor. That mistake will cost you sales.

When opening a dollar store it is important to remember that the little things about your store can be the ones that create long term success. Those little thinks can literally make or break the business. One of the most important little things that need to be outstanding about your store is the cashiers who help customers with their purchases.

The cashier that helps a customer is generally the last person that the shopper sees before leaving the store. It is that last interaction that will often lead to either a return a visit or the resolution to never return again. In fact, a great experience can lead to a lifetime customer who refers many new shoppers to your store. When opening a dollar store return shoppers and referrals are two of the most important components for success.

Great customer service starts with a greeting and a smile. When opening a dollar store be sure your cashiers, and all employees for that matter, are expected to greet every shopper and to smile. This expectation should be reinforced during management daily interactions and during formal employee meetings and reviews.

If you plan on opening a dollar store never allow shoppers to wait for someone to help them with their purchases. While it is okay to have a short line waiting for a cashier who is checking out shoppers, it is not okay for shoppers to wait at the cash register area without a cashier in sight. One easy way to insure that there is always a cashier waiting is to designate a primary cashier during all hours that the store is open for business.a

Train your cashiers to share information about newly arrived merchandise and special sales with the shoppers they help. That provides a topic for friendly conversation and it will increase store sales. Give it a try when opening a dollar store.

One of the most important areas for continual maintenance is end cap displays. When properly managed end caps will be the highest selling areas of your store. In fact with proper management end caps can also provide a little extra excitement as shoppers find new and different items and then purchase those items. When opening a dollar store it is that excitement that will also bring shoppers back to your store time after time

There are several actions that should be taken to properly manage your end cap displays when opening a dollar store. Start by rotating in new items that are related to that aisle where the end cap is located. For example, displays of household cleaners could be placed on an end cap at the end of the household cleaner aisle. Another variation is to rotate in new items onto end caps that complement the aisle. For example sponges and scrubbers could be placed on that same end cap in the household cleaner aisle.

There are some other methods to incorporate in your end cap management strategy when opening a dollar store. Be sure to use signage on you end caps. This will draw attention to the items that are being displayed. Clean, bright, properly printed signs also brighten up your store.

Be sure to throw in a special from time to time. That will add interest and excitement when shoppers discover the extra savings. Buy merchandise for your end caps when there are special prices available. When opening a dollar store you will also find that you can purchase merchandise for end cap displays at trade shows that you attend.

If you are opening a dollar store don’t discount the importance that rotating new merchandise on end caps can have to your success. It gives your store a fresh and different appearance when shoppers return. It adds some excitement. It creates new sales.
